Second Annual National Trails Day in Our National Park
And Redwood Adventures is Hosting It Again!
On June 7, 2008, American Hiking will celebrate the 16th Anniversary of National Trails Day – a long standing dedication to the celebration, promotion, and protection of America’s magnificent trail system. Since 1993, National Trails Day has grown to inspire thousands of participants at events nationwide. NTD is now a permanent fixture on calendars of trail clubs, outdoor businesses and government agencies nationwide.
This will be the second year that the event will be held on the North Coast at the Redwood Adventure Center in Redwood National Park. The Redwood Adventure Center is a new events center located on an old mill site at the heart of the Redwood National Park trail system. We are having our one year anniversary as the official sponsor of National Trail Day for Redwood National and State Parks. The Redwood Adventure Center is a part of Redwood Adventure’s efforts to bring fun, entertainment and events to Redwood National and State Parks.
National Trails Day® (NTD), a day of celebration held at thousands of places nationwide, was created to:
- Promote public awareness of and appreciation for America’s trails and the people who build and maintain them.
- Promote the health benefits of trails and how they can improve the quality of life.
- Build partnerships and alliances that work together beyond National Trails Day. This includes partnerships with trail and conservation organizations, health professionals, public land agencies, and outdoor retailers and manufacturers.
- Encourage cooperative efforts among the various trail users, including: hikers, bicyclists, equestrians, walkers, boaters, and others.
America's 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for exercise, study, photography, camping, relaxing or solitude. Trails take us to good physical and mental health by giving us fresh air, getting our hearts pumping, and allowing us the chance to get away from our daily challenges and stresses. Trails provide gentle to strenuous workouts, depending on where you want to go and what you want to do.
In addition to getting people outside to enjoy trails, National Trails Day events raise awareness of trails and inform the public of the need to protect and maintain trail corridors. It is the perfect springboard for local trail initiatives and a chance to recognize the groups, public agencies and individual leaders who are making a difference.
Tour Descriptions
Kayak Zak’s Stone Lagoon Bird & Wildlife Watching Kayak Trips
($40) 9:30 a.m. & Noon by Reservation. Group size is limited.
Stone Lagoon nests in the heart of Humboldt Lagoons State Park and borders Redwood National Park. We will explore the lagoon and view shorebirds and wildlife from the water on this pristine Lagoon using sit-on-top kayaks, both singles and tandems. This trip is appropriate for beginners and will include a brief kayaking lesson. Lifejackets, kayaks, and paddles will be provided by Kayak Zak’s.
Wetsuits are available by reservation at an additional fee. Participants should dress for the water temperature around 65°. Our coastal summer weather rarely gets as high as 70°. You should wear synthetic layers. The first layer wicks moisture away from your body. The next layer should keep you warm. The top layer should protect you from wind. A windbreaker jacket is fine. You want to wear synthetic water-wicking fabrics. Polyester is best. Cotton is never a good idea on our coastal waters. Cotton stays wet and cold and gets very heavy when wet. You should wear your bathing suit, and a light-weight, close-fitting polyester or polypropylene undershirt such as a rash guard or wicking underwear you would wear for skiing. Bring a warmer layer such as polyester fleece. you can wear polypropylene long johns and fleece tops and pants with a light nylon jacket to block wind. Wear shoes you can swim in and that you are willing to get wet. Warm synthetic socks are nice even with neoprene booties. Do not bring any electronics unless they are waterproof! Drinking water, waterproof binoculars, and disposable waterproof cameras are recommended. Maximum paddler weight not to exceed 250 lbs. For specific inquiries or reservations call Kayak Zak’s 707 498-1130.

Bird Watching:
Cost: $5
Four trips: 5am, 9am, 1pm*, 5pm
* The 1pm tour will be a sight impaired tour
Marbled Murrelet:
5am
Discover the endangered and mysterious Marbled Murrelet, set in dramatic redwood old-growth forest with a local murrelet surveyor. This trip to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick is for early birds! The dawn chorus, Varied Thrush, and Pileated Woodpecker, accompanies pre-dawn flights of the murrelets. Flat terrain, but wet. Restrooms available. These birds are usually seen only in flight and therefore are difficult to get in a spotting scope. Plenty of other redwood forest birds can be enjoyed.
Bald Hills Tour:
9am
Over the hills and through the woods, this carpool tour provides great vistas and conifer forest birds. Interpretation of local forestry practices will also be presented. Expect Steller’s Jay, Varied Thrush, Winter Wren, and possibly Pileated Woodpecker.
Sight Impaired Discovery Tour:
1pm
The trail at Prairie Creek State Park allows the sight impaired to enjoy a redwood forest experience. Sight folks can also take this opportunity to explore their other senses. In a quiet forest, listening for birds can be a very relaxing activity. The trail has a rope guide and discovers gaint redwoods, goose-pen hollows, prickly Sitka spruce and smooth burl. Birdsong will be emphasised for the audible part of the trip. The redwoods only have a few species, so the song identification will be helped by not having a lot of other bird sound going on at the time. Maintained trails are flat and restrooms are available.
Spotted Owl Tour:
5pm
Visit excellent spots to observe Northern Spotted Owls in their nesting habitat. Offers superb photographic opportunities, as the owls have become accustomed to human presence over the years they have been studied. The owls may be seen roadside, but more likely we will hike along a short but possibly steep, slippery trail. Wear hiking boots and dress in layers. A spotting scope won’t be needed to see the owls.
